I’m back from Chicago–and the first thing I did was head over to Monticello for a delicious, healthful brunch. And, of course, I checked on the wine supply. We just got in a new shipment of the Colome Torrontes, which I’m very happy about. This Argentinian beauty got 90 points from both Tanzer and “Wine and Spirits.” It’s a wonderfully pure example of the native Argentinian grape with its perfumed aromas of rose petal and spice. Intense and herby, it’s a perfect choice just to sip on a warm spring day–or to drink with all manner of appetizers.
If you’ve never had torrontes, you should definitely try this, even if you’re not ordinarily a white wine person. I think of it as a perfect white for red wine drinkers. You’ll see why as soon as you taste it. We’ll have three other wine tastes, too, of course, all for $5 (plus tax/tip). Tony will be making seasonal appetizers (this may be the last week for asparagus) and I’m so happy to be home that I’m sure I’ll be cheerful company.

Tuesday Wine tasting

I’ve been really impressed with the wines of Berkeley wine-maker Chris Brocway, who is dedicated to making wines that come from only sustainably, organically, or biodynamically grown grapes–from areas that most would consider marginal climates. He believes that vineyards develop true character and complexity when they have to struggle to survive. He uses minimal intervention in a further effort to let the grapes speak for themselves. Says Chris, “We are a ‘low wattage’ winery in the sense that we have very little modern equipment. Grapes are pitchforked whole-cluster into the fermenters, fermentation is allowed to happen spontaneously, all wines are basket pressed, with little/no sulphur used in our wines until bottling. True asphalt winemaking, in an urban winery.”
This week we’ll be tasting four of Chris’ wonderful, low-alcohol, food-friendly, interesting wines. Do join us, anytime between 4:30 and 6:30. $5 for all four tastes. Conversation and good company free.

Matchbook vineyard is located in Yolo County’s Dunnigan Hills AVA and features 73.5 acres of varietals. Matchbook, Mossback, Sawbuck and Chasing Venus are all Crew Wines, owned by John and Lane Giguere, founders of the R.H. Phillips Winery, which produced such noted brands as R.H. Phillips and Toasted Head, home to the. The dinner is sixty-five dollars per person, plus tax & tip. Reservations required.
